Highland West Senior Citizens Apartments were built in 1964 by
the Wheat Ridge, Westminster and Highland Park Presbyterian
Churches as a mission project. In the summer of 1978 the churches
developed a vision for the land to the south of Highland West Senior Citizens Apartments to
extend their mission. The land was sold to the Denver Presbytery
of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) in 1966 but was never
developed. For two and one-half years much planning was done. In
December 1981 discretionary funds for 117 units were obtained from
HUD and the land was given back by the Denver Presbytery as a
gift. Ground breaking for Highland South occurred in July 1982
and a year later residents moved in, fully occupying the 117
apartments.
